Nehemiah 8:9-12

“And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Nehemiah 8:10

In this passage Israel gathers to hear God’s word read to them. Unlike us, they did not have a copy – or several – to pour over in individual study. As Ezra reads, the people become so grieved they begin to weep.

  • But in verse 10, Nehemiah reminds them of what their attitude should be. Write it down.
  • As believers in Jesus Christ… we have not only His word, but His Spirit. Read 1 Corinthians 2:10-12. We are filled with His Spirit, He knows every thought – every feeling – and gives generously according to His love and mercy and wisdom. The joy of the Lord is our strength! It is not about worldly happiness, but eternal –  God given Joy. How does this change your perspective on the Joy from the Lord.
  •  “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 5:13 NLT
    • Who is our source of hope?
    • What do we need to do to be filled with joy and peace?
    • What can the result be?
  • We have a choice. Putting our trust in God and allowing Him to fill us with His joy and strength… or looking to this world for happiness and affirmation. What will you choose?
  • Pray Romans 5:13 for yourself today & trust God for His joy and strength.

Philippians 4:12-13

I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
Philippians 4:12b-13 NLT

  • What is Paul’s secret to living?
  • He points out here that it doesn’t matter our circumstance, how can we accomplish whatever is set before us each day?
  • Does Paul tell us that we can do some things, or every-other thing, or almost all things. No… what does he tell us here?
  • So, when life seems like a waterfall, overwhelming or uncertain. Who can we rely on?
  • Write down Philippians 4:13.
  • Now insert whatever is weighing on your heart. I can ……. through Christ, who gives me strength. Pray it… ask Him for His strength. Then trust Him!

As you may know. This verse has taken the country by storm… Steph Curry one of the NBA’s best players lives by it. He writes it on his shoes before every game as a reminder of who he plays for and who enables him to play. May we all write it on our hearts as a reminder of who we live for and who enables us to live. And keep Steph Curry in your prayers as he is an amazing role model to kids (and adults).

Exodus 15:2

The Lord is my strength and my song,
    and he has become my salvation;
this is my God, and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt him.”

Exodus 15:2

background20write

  • Moses wrote this song after God had brought them to safety after crossing the Red Sea. It is too awesome to even imagine what it must have been like to walk through that expanse on dry land. Does Moses claim this magnificent act for his glory. No… who does he direct our eyes to?
  • Where did Moses receive the strength to lead his people out of captivity?
  • Notice the word he uses here, “is.” Moses says… “The Lord is my strength.” (emphasis mine). Does that change your perspective on how you will get through today?
  • Like Moses… write down your thanks to the Almighty. That you might sing His praise for the strength that He gives.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

  • Although life sometimes seems haphazard, you can be certain that it is not an accident. What does Jeremiah 29:11 tell us about God’s plan?
  • He knows the plans He has for you. Write down the words that He uses to describe the plan that He has for your life.
  • What joy to know He has plans to give us a future and a hope. Write the definition of hope.
  • What do we know about  hope from God’s word (see Romans 5:2-5, Romans 12:12,Romans 15:4, Romans 15:13).
  • Hope does not disappoint…because we know Jesus, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). Write down what it means to you to have hope not built on circumstances or wishes… but build not the cross of Christ and God’s perfect plan for your life into eternity.
  • He knows! Put your life in His hands, and ask God to pour out His hope into your heart by the power of the Holy Spirit so that you will overflow with hope.

Ephesians 2:10

For we are his workmanship,

created in Christ Jesus for good works,

which God prepared beforehand,

If you’re anything like me you start out with a plan each day. But, by mid-day it feels a little like controlled chaos. Yet, if we turn our day over to the Lord we can be certain that we are walking on His prepared path.

  • This Ephesians verse tells you specifically who you are in Christ. Write it down.
  • You are His workmanship! It is too awesome for words! Now write down why you were created…
  • When was all of this prepared by our almighty Creator?
  • You have a purpose… to do good works and honor God by your service to him (Matthew 10:14-16). Why is this important?
  • Take time now to lay your day before the keeper of all time. Ask Him to guide your day and reveal to you where He has called you to serve Him.

Exodus 50:15-21

“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.”

Exodus 15:20

  • Read Genesis 37. What did Joseph’s brothers do? Why do you think they did it?
  • Do you think that Joseph’s brothers had good intentions when they sold him as a slave?
  • As Genesis 50:20 tells us… No they did not mean it for good… But God! I love that… But God!!!!!! He is awesome! How did God use their selfish actions?
  • Ultimately God saved the Nation of Israel through this act. Nothing is by accident. Our tough times are being used for His good and for His purposes (Romans 8:28). Write down a struggle in your life and pray that the Lord would use it for His good and His glory. Put it in His hands…

What a blessing to know that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This doesn’t mean life is perfect or easy. But it does mean that it has meaning and purpose. Praying today that He would touch your life and work things together for His good and His glory! Praise God that He will do it!

Isaiah 46:8-10

“Remember this and stand firm,
recall it to mind, you transgressors,
 remember the former things of old;
for I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me,
declaring the end from the beginning
and from ancient times things not yet done,
saying, ‘My counsel shall stand,
and I will accomplish all my purpose…’”

background20write

  • From this passage, what are we first asked to do?
  •  In this Isaiah 46 passage, what does God declare?
  • From  from beginning to end, the Bible is a beautiful story of love, salvation, mercy and grace (Genesis 1, John 1:1-5, Matthew 24:36, Revelation 22:7) With this in mind, why do you think it is important to recall, “the former things of old” ?
  • In your own words, share what it means that God declares “the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done.”
  • Write the last line of this passage. Let it sink in. In a world where things seem to be out of control, what comfort do you take from these words?

Live By Faith

Ask the Spirit to guide you as you read God’s word for today. Remember to read the entire passage.

Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
Galatians 2:20

background20write

  • When you choose  to live as a follower of Christ how do you now identify with Christ’s crucifixion?
  • It is no longer about you, no longer about “your” life, instead it is about who lives in you! You live because of whom?
  • When you make the choice to follow Christ you are called not to live by our own wisdom but instead to live how?
  • As Christians we do not follow Christ just because he was wise, He was a prophet, or a great teacher – yes all those things are true. But we follow Christ because He chose to show His love for us in what way?
  • Jesus sacrificed Himself because He loves us, because He wants us to be with Him for eternity (John 3:16). You can trust Him with your life, you can put your faith in Him. Is there something that you are not willing to trust Jesus with? Confess it now, lay your life at His feet, and ask Him to help you trust Him as you walk with Him in faith trusting Him for your salvation and your life.

The more we trust, the more we allow our life and our will to be directed by Christ, the more He can use us for His glory. Awesome! Christ lives in you!  Is there anything more that we could possibly desire?  Praying for you!
